This article talks about a simple approach to organizing your ideas in public speaking as well as some speaking tips to get the most out of this approach. This “simple” approach to organization can be divided into three basic steps: 1. Preparing the audience for your main message. 2. Delivering your main message. 3. Providing a brief recap. Each of these steps centers on the orderly flow of ideas from one part to another. Certain speaking tips allow you to achieve this effect. 1. Preparing the Audience Telling your audience where you are going allows them to have a smoother journey. The following speaking tips come in handy at this stage: – Ask questions or mention facts about your topic then explain how your message addresses them. -Your title should suggest the main point, but not disclose it. -Briefly outline the subtopics covered. -Indicate the timeframe to complete your talk. 2. Delivering your Main Message This is where the main message is presented. Here are some helpful tips: -Make sure that the main idea and all supporting subtopics are consistent. -When presenting arguments, arrange them by logical sequence or by strength. -When describing places or events, follow spatial or chronological order. -Follow the outline you have discussed. – Conclude your message by stating how supporting ideas add up to the main idea. -When recommending a course of action, end your main message by using supporting points as justification. 3. Providing a Brief Recap Telling the audience where you have taken them helps ensure that your message has been conveyed. -Restating your main and supporting points as outlined. -Suggest further resources to the audience. -Ask or answer questions. You have been introduced to a simple approach of idea organization. Try to follow these steps and speaking tips and see how they work for you. Keep in mind though that there is no “standard” method of organization. It really depends on your purpose and audience. Also, the success of public speaking comes with the participation of the audience. Participation in the sense that there exists an interaction between the public speaker and the audience. It might not be in the form of sharing ideas or in the form of a question and answer, but interaction in a way that the audience are ready to listen to what the public speaker is about to deliver. Nonetheless, it helps to have a simple guide.
