Network cables are necessary because they link together two or more electronic equipment so that there would be a sharing of resources such as through printers, scanners, and computers. They are very useful as communication lines in exchange for any form of communication, data transfer and transmission of electronic codes that can be decoded into other forms. In this manner, network cables are also known as data transmission cables because they connect network device to another device or devices. Network cables can be able to make high-speed data transfers between different components that are connected on the network.

Today, there have been a broad range of network cables that are very much utilized but their uses depend on the kind of network they can better be useful. Factors for efficient use depend on the network s topology, size and the protocol. Network cables are especially useful if a network has a large number of devices that are connected together because network cables can provide high speed and error free connectivity if they are closely connected.

Some of the most common cables that are being used today are the UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) cables, the coaxial cables and the fiber optic cables. Among these types, the UTP is the most usable because it is largely used for school networks and can transfer data at 100 mbps. Coaxial cables which are very ordinary because these are the main cables used for our TVs have single copper conductor at their center. The copper is surrounded by braided metal shield which act as insulation between the copper and the plastic layer. Fiber optic cables are the latest among these three types and they consist of center glass core that is surrounded by many layers of protective materials. Rather than electronic signals, it transmit light so it can transfer signals over much longer and wider distances than the UTP and the coaxial cables.

Since almost everybody today use the internet, the local area network (LAN) is commonly used by organizations to stay connected and at the same time connected to the internet. The use of LAN has enabled these organizations to go on networking and improve the efficiency of their exchange of information. This has contributed to the demand for network cables.

If we consider it carefully, network cables are the main support system and strength of any network. Without them, there would be no possibility of networking, communication transfer, and connection to the outside world. However, today more companies and organizations are trying to exploit the use of other mediums in data transfer such as infrared light beams and high frequency radio signals. These systems are almost wireless and can connect faster when connecting on workstations. However, they are only usable if used on short distances so there is still the advantage of doing away with the network cables. Unless there will be more signal stations for infrared beams and radio signals to be established, network cables will still rule the scene in networking.

Moreover, with the introduction of these technologies and if only they can properly enhanced, there might come a time that the use of network cables could be at stake but until now there is no doubt that we are still satisfied with the capabilities of network cables as they still cater to our needs.
